Sky-Based Autonomy

One of the most revolutionary elements of Burke’s work is how the drone doesn't just follow AI-written code—it actually hosts the control system in-flight. By embedding a Flask web server into the Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, the drone becomes a live-access node, essentially transforming into a flying IoT server.

This setup defies the traditional GCS approach and presents new possibilities in remote operations. For example, in a disaster zone with compromised infrastructure, such self-hosted drones could offer a decentralized way to manage flight data, search-and-rescue missions, or environmental monitoring without relying on ground-based servers or internet links.

Moreover, since the AI wrote the control system itself, the process could be repeated or customized at scale, enabling dynamic reprogramming of fleets without human developers needing to code each individual system manually.

The project still faces limitations. As Burke notes, many generative models still struggle with long-term memory and task continuity, particularly for large-scale engineering projects. Additionally, hardware constraints on embedded systems like Raspberry Pi require that AI-generated code be both optimized and resource-efficient—something today’s models can struggle with.
